One thing I wish I'd see more of among Ratio fans is some thought about how he views himself as a teacher.
Like yes, of course he refuses to compromise on the quality and rigor of the education he imparts, and he would find it unforgivably unethical to lower his standards in order to pass more students who had not genuinely learned the material. This is core to his character.
However, as someone who is a teacher IRL, I know the absolutely miserable feeling setting that kind of standard can cause. There's the obvious disheartening sense of disappointment ("Are students these days really not capable of doing the work correctly? Is our future in danger, if this is the highest level of understanding our current generation of students can achieve?"), but even worse than that is the self-doubt.
"Is this somehow my fault? Am I not teaching this material in the right ways for the students to learn? Is there something I could have done differently to get through to these students? Would a better teacher have a higher passing rate?"
We know that Ratio does (or at least did) struggle with feeling inferior to the Genius Society, so I think it is also likely, as much as he absolutely will not budge on his academic standards, that he has doubts about his teaching ability as well.
This is the man who wants to educate the entire world to cure the disease of ignorance, and yet only 3% of his actual students are able to get there. How can someone who gets so few of his direct students to a state of enlightenment hope to enlighten the whole universe? If so few students are successfully learning the material of a given class, doesn't that mean the teacher is doing something wrong?Would a better teacher--would a genius, maybe--not be able to impart their knowledge more efficiently and educate even the most challenging of students?
As someone constantly struggling with that balance between keeping academic standards high while also meeting the needs of today's students, I think the passing rates of his courses must affect Dr. Ratio much more deeply than I've seen fans discuss. I think he would question himself harshly over his class success rates, and I think he must be constantly trying to push himself to become the best teacher he possibly can be.
tl;dr: I hope one day the HSR fandom will stop sleeping on the fact that Ratio is an actual practicing professor who probably has astronomical levels of teacher angst. 😂

Free Korean Learning Courses! : Part 1
Tumblr media
-> These are some free resources I used or heard about a lot to learn Korean and what they include, there's probably way more! I'll make more parts in the future. There's also ratings and pesonal notes about each one, but again they're 'personal' so it might not be the same for everyone! That's why you should always try it yourself first.
-> These resources are or were fully free when I used them, if anything changed and they're no longer free I do not take any responsibility for possible accidental purchases, I recommend to always check first before processing with it.
Here we go:
GoodJobKorean — Full free Hangul Course, 12 Lessons, Videos (with pronunciation, etc) + Pdf Practice sheets (with some vocabulary) + Quizes to see if you understood each lesson.
Rating: 100/10 I tried and loved it, easy to understand and explained nicely. Really useful for beginners learning hangul!
A/N: You may have to rebuy it after a month (not sure because I finished it in less then a month and never logged back in) but It's still free (if not you can always just make another account to get it free again)
GoldenKeyKorean: Free Hangul course, pronunciation + 2H long master course (advanced and basic levels) with 2 pdf books
Rating: I personally did not try this one, but I'm pretty sure it's fully free (at least that's what I've seen), but he often does limited editions/limited time special free courses so it's better to check if the offer is still active and follow his instagram for future updates and courses.
Now Korean Class: Fully free 9 Korean courses with different levels (1-9) with multiple videos for each, explains sentence structures, grammar, counters, numbers, and way more.
Rating: 100/10, It really is free, multiple levels, sooo many different things to learn I absolutely loved it!!
A/N: You just have to rebuy it after a month but I'm pretty sure it's still free (if not you can always just make another account to get it free again). I recently lost acess to it, idk why I think my phone is lagging... It tells me something went wrong to try again later, lol, just in case some content changed etc I wouldn't know.
Koldoristudy: 3 different Free Korean PDF study sheets, 1 Hangul, 1 Vocabulary and 1 winter study, includes Grammar, stroke order guides and syllable blocks,
Rating: 10/10 Loved it, I thought it would be just some pdf files to boringly write hangul/words but It's actually way more! it explains grammar and some useful language rules!
Talk to me in korean: Multiple free podcasts on different platforms + PDF with grammar and vocabulary explained for different levels of learners, 7 days free trial with possible cancelation
Rating: 9/10 It's really good, I'm just not a big fan of podcasts as I have a short attention spawn LOL. I personally didn't try the 7-days free trial but they do have LOTS of different lessons and videos that seem to be amazing and useful.
A/N: personally I find their website really confusing, to make things easier you can try things like just typing "Talk To me In korean (Pdf level _)" on google and the first link should be the free pdf file, etc etc.
Loescen Learn Korean Website: Free Interactive web-based learning, important vocabulary, pronunciation beginner to intermediate level, basic conversation courses and dialogues
Rating: 8/10, so good!! It surprised me, I just wish it went more in deep about things like sentence structures and grammar instead of blindly learning dialogue lines or words without breaking them into steps for deeper understanding of the language.
A/N: works for other languages too!!
Live Lingua: Multiple free ebooks and audio files lessons, grammar, vocabulary, hangul, etc, beginner to advanced,
Rating: 9/10 Covers up a lot of different things like I said, grammar, vocabulary, etc etc, but AGAIN each course covers many subjects and it quickly feels heavy and too long/complicated/takes too much time (personally for me, as an individual with ADHD)
How to study korean: LOTS of grammar and vocabulary, beginners to advanced, multiple lessons, linked YT videos to reinforce lessons, PDFs, etc
Rating: 100/10 explains really well, SO MUCH STUFF, different levels, it's really awesome! Lessons are available in multiple languages and not just English!! However again I find it a bit intimidating as it really has LOTS of things to learn which make it seem hard and heavy...
A/N: Personally I find the website complicated to navigate 😭 just type "how to study korean lesson _" for easier access if you want and It should be the top results
Udemy TOPIK grammar through 100 patters: TOPIK vocabulary, grammar and conversations, 100 grammatical patters koreans use a lot
Rating: 8/10 really good, well explained, but again personally it feels pretty heavy and long, videos in Korean with English subtitles, however there are no English subtitles for "example sentences" which sucks, you need to know some basic vocabulary to really understand the example sentences used there.
Tomi Korean: Free PDF with 430 basic korean vocabulary (words, verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc) with audio files, free PDF Worksheet for hangul learning
Rating: 8/0 Love it, really nice for useful vocabulary but you'll have to willingly study the words cause the pdf only makes you write it once and it's really just Korean-English translations, but it has images so its good for visual learners too! Personally I also found it takes a lot of storage to download everything lol.
A/N: I did not check the hangul worksheet as I can already write and read hangul but little personal opinion/tip; I think GoodJobKorean is the best option to learn Hangul here, specially compared to this one. Yes I did not try this Hangul Worksheet but I believe GoodJobKorean offers more variated content and help (videos, quizes, etc) than what a PDF sheet has to offer, that's my opinion.
That's all so far!
Many of these courses have social media accounts where they post different content and tricks to learn, I'll be making a post about those in the future too!!
If anything changed since I first used these resources or if there's any misinformation in this post, please let me know!

So I was rewatching the hbomb plagiarism video to get some chill morning embroidery time in and I got to the bit about Radclyff Hall and her book, The Well of Loneliness, about lesbian WW1 ambulance drivers, and the video says all of her books were ordered burned, but I was curious and fam. At least one person hid their copy. It's on Project Gutenberg Australia. So if you want to read about lesbian ambulance drivers in the first world war...

My scheduling button is broken and my WIP Wednesday post didn’t go out, but enjoy it anyway. Short snippet of the Prayers spinoff oneshot focusing more the relationship between Maedhros and Fingon, which I’m writing through Finnu’s Gaze™️ because frankly he’s as unwell and obsessive as the rest of them, it just comes out in a more, er, Catholic way than the Shia Fëanorians. Enjoy the first few paragraphs, aka their first meeting as children!

Sultan of Sultans (snippet)
Before the CH Overpass scraped an arc out of its sky and the CSI Complex turned it into a boxing ring for a dozen mutually-indistinguishable bakeries, Mananchira Square was most known for its enormous freshwater pond with a salt-crusted shore. The pond was initially built in the fourteenth century to serve as a bathing pool for the feudal ruler of Kozhikode, the Zamorin. Zamorin was not the name of a single person or family, but rather a title taken by the ruler, much like Sultan, or Shah, and beginning in the thirteenth century they consolidated Kozhikode into a small kingdom and introduced it to the world.
Conveniently located right upon a wide, straight section of coast without crags or rocky shallows, our Kozhikode swiftly became a globally renowned trading port ruled jointly by the Zamorin Hindu feudal lords and their admirals, the Mappila Marakkar, a Muslim seafaring dynasty. It was referred to as the City of Spices in the literature of the time—with the cloth calico said to be named after Kozhikode’s Anglicised name, Calicut—and it was the most prominent city in Kerala until the seventeenth century, after which it fell into middling irrelevance in the grand scheme of things.
That was where Russo and I first met in 1915, by a pondside alcove where Thomas-uncle’s very-unofficial sweetshop used to stand. We were around four or five years old, and from that day on we crept quietly through the rest of our lives together like halves of a single breath. He was very beautiful, then and always. His mother used to say he was carved from the cloth of the Sultans of yore—Kujanli Marrakar the admiral, or perhaps even the Zamorin himself, a displaced resurrection in a family of Muslim artisans. I was much older when I realised such a comment had not been simply an ode to his beauty. Russo’s every footstep was a verdict, every laugh of his was a blade, even then. Unfortunately of course, the flip side of resembling the Sultans of yore, was that it would be very easy for certain labels like, say, terrorist, to stick.
“You know,” he told me that first day, pinching me instead of saying hello like a normal child. “You know the Zamorin was thirty feet tall and just as wide? And that he ate people? Oh, and do you know this pond has a massive crocodile who lives in the middle?”
“You shouldn’t pinch people,” I let him know. In hindsight, it was probably saying such things that made me such a pinchable child. “It’s not a good habit.”
Obviously, he pinched me again. He was very fair, I remember, because he was too young then to have spent much time running about in the sun as he does these days. He pinched people for no reason except that he could, had oddly light eyes (the colloquial term for them was poocha-kannu, cat-eyes, possibly because the general light-eyed population in Kozhikode at the time were an introduced species who seemed to have the ability to see their best only in darkness) and a vaguely commanding air to him that I didn’t at the time realise was the result of being a first-and-doted-upon son.
And so, initially I assumed he was one of the British sahib children with an extraordinary grasp of the local dialect, and just stood there silently, not wanting to even cry in case his father strode out and shouted at mine. Then his mother called out, telling him she’d eat him alive next time she caught him pinching people he’d only just met (as if it was fine for him to pinch people he knew well), and realised he was, unfortunately, one of our own. He pinched me a third time, irritated that his mother had caught him at it, and I cried then, because it was safe to and also because being pinched thrice for existing in this horrible little boy’s vicinity was too much for my five year old self to bear.
“Don’t you want to know why the Zamorin was so tall and wide?” he asked, as I followed him across to the pond because I didn’t want to play with my baby sister, though I was still crying because he had pinched me. He started out explaining about the Zamorin but midway through switched to an equally untrue story about a crocodile that bit off his little brother Maglor’s leg, recounted with such vicious delight I feared it was less an overactive imagination and more just wishful thinking. And at some point he must have gotten tired of my hysterics however, because he shoved a whirling palm-frond toy into my hand, watched me wave it about and told me I could keep it if I got a grip on my whining.
“But don’t play with it too much,” he informed me kindly, patting my shoulder. “I found it near the public toilets. You could get sick and die. You know cholera?”
As if cholera was his close personal friend.
